Julie Keeps Quiet (original title: Julie zwijgt), the feature debut of screenwriter and director Leonardo van Dijl, has been selected for the Semaine de la Critique, the oldest parallel section to the Cannes Festival, it was announced today.
This is Leonardo van Dijl’s second appearance at Cannes, after his drama short Stephanie was selected for the festival’s Short Film Competition in 2020, before going on to screen at the Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals, among others. Produced by Flemish production house De Wereldvrede, Stephanie was made thanks to the VAF Wildcard that van Dijl won in 2015 for his graduation film at LUCA School of Arts.
As in his previous films, Leonardo van Dijl's feature debut gives us glimpse into the world of competitive sports. As the star player at an elite tennis academy, Julie’s life revolves around the game she loves. When her coach falls under investigation and is suddenly suspended, all of the club's players are encouraged to speak up. But Julie decides to keep quiet…
The title character in Julie Keeps Quiet is played by newcomer (and tennis player) Tessa Van den Broeck. The principal supporting roles go to Koen De Bouw, Ruth Becquart, Pierre Gervais, Sofie Decleir, Tijmen Govaerts, Claire Bodson and Laurent Caron.
Ruth Becquart also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Leonardo van Dijl. Behind the scenes, the team included DOP Nicolas Karakatsanis (Cruella, I, Tonya), editor Bert Jacobs (Zillion, The Day) and composer Caroline Shaw (Bombshell, Fleishman Is in Trouble), among other talents.
The feature is produced by Gilles De Schryver, Gilles Coulier, Wouter Sap and Roxanne Sarkozi for De Wereldvrede, which is also known for Holy Rosita and Roomies, among other titles. The co-producers are Belgian production company Les Films du Fleuve, led by the Dardenne brothers and Delphine Tomson, the Swedish production houses Hobab and Film i Väst, and the French-American production house Blue Morning Pictures, led by Oscar-winner Florian Zeller.
As a debut film, Julie Keeps Quiet is eligible for the Caméra d'Or, the award for best first film across all sections at Cannes. In 2018, this award was won by Lukas Dhont with Girl, making him the first director from Flanders to secure this honour.
Paradiso Films will release Julie Keeps Quiet in theatres in Benelux, while the French distributor is jour2fête. New Europe Film Sales will handle international sales of the film.

Scenarist en regisseur Leonardo van Dijl won in 2015 een VAF Wildcard met zijn eindwerk aan LUCA School of Arts. Met zijn VAF Wildcard maakte hij voor productiehuis De Wereldvrede de korte fictiefilm Stephanie, die in 2020 geselecteerd werd voor de Kortfilmcompetitie van de Officiële Selectie van het Festival van Cannes en nadien o.a. te zien was op de filmfestivals van Toronto en San Sebastian.
Net als in zijn vorige films opent Leonardo van Dijl met Julie zwijgt een blik op de wereld van de competitieve sport.
Als grote tennisbelofte bij een prestigieuze club staat alles in Julies leven in het teken van tennis. Wanneer de coach die haar naar de top kan brengen plotseling geschorst wordt en er een onderzoek wordt gestart, worden alle spelers van de club aangemoedigd om hun verhaal te vertellen. Maar Julie beslist te zwijgen...
Het titelpersonage in Julie zwijgt wordt gespeeld door nieuwkomer en tennisspeler Tessa Van den Broeck. Belangrijke bijrollen zijn er voor Koen De Bouw, Ruth Becquart, Pierre Gervais, Sofie Decleir, Tijmen Govaerts, Claire Bodson en Laurent Caron.
Ruth Becquart schreef samen met Leonardo van Dijl het scenario voor de film, achter de schermen werkten o.a. DOP Nicolas Karakatsanis (Cruella, I Tonya), monteur Bert Jacobs (Zillion, De dag) en componist Caroline Shaw (Bombshell, Fleishman Is in Trouble) mee.

Julie zwijgt zal in Cannes in wereldpremière gaan onder de internationale titel Julie Keeps Quiet. Als debuut komt de film bovendien in aanmerking voor de Caméra d'Or, de prijs voor de beste eerste film over alle secties heen, die in 2018 als eerste Vlaming werd gewonnen door Lukas Dhont met Girl.
Paradiso Films zal Julie zwijgt in de zalen brengen in de Benelux, de Franse distributeur is jour2fête. Het Poolse New Europe Film Sales verzorgt de internationale verkoop van de film.
Julie zwijgt kwam tot stand met de steun van het VAF/Filmfonds van de Vlaamse minister van Cultuur. Verder kreeg de productie ook steun van het Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, New Dawn, Film i Väst, Proximus en de tax shelter-maatregel van de Belgische federale overheid via Flanders Tax Shelter.
